The beautiful forms and shapes of a humble weed are given centre stage in this wood engraving by John Farleigh. He had a natural empathy with the wood engraving medium, as can be seen in this work with its delicate lines and contrasting areas of black and white in the background. The film looks at the wide application of wood engravings today including independent prints for exhibition, book illustration, fine art press and advertising. Other contributors to the film include the author Philip Pullman CBE, FRSL, Bankside Gallery and the Ashmolean Museum. It was John Farleigh's course on illustrating, though, that revealed and nurtured her talent for wood-engraving. In she had first seen and been inspired by Farleigh's illustrations for D.H.
