A provocative theory of the gimmick as an aesthetic category steeped in the anxieties of capitalism. Repulsive and yet strangely attractive, the gimmick is a form that can be found virtually everywhere in capitalism. It comes in many guises: a musical hook, a financial strategy, a striptease, a novel of ideas. His primary research interest is on aesthetic theory and video game music. He was previously lecturer in music at St Catherine’s College, Oxford. The last half-decade has seen the rapid and expansive development of video game music studies. As with any new area of study, this significant sub-discipline is still tackling fundamental questions. I’m surprised by the books featured in the abstract. If you’re talking about book-long game studies books it’s odd not to mention the video game theory reader by Wolff, which I’d say is the most widely referenced one.
